Teeth Whitening
A bright, dazzling smile can make a lasting impression. Over time, various factors such as aging, lifestyle choices, and certain foods and beverages can cause teeth to lose their natural whiteness. Fortunately, modern dentistry offers effective solutions to restore and enhance the brilliance of your smile. Teeth whitening has gained immense popularity as a safe and non-invasive cosmetic dental procedure. In this article, we will explore the benefits, methods, and considerations of teeth whitening, empowering you to make an informed decision and achieve the radiant smile you deserve.
Understanding teeth discolouration
Teeth can become discolored due to both extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Extrinsic stains occur on the outer surface of the teeth and are commonly caused by the consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco use, and poor oral hygiene. Intrinsic stains, on the other hand, originate from within the tooth and can result from factors like aging, certain medications, and excessive fluoride exposure during tooth development.
The Benefits of Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening offers numerous advantages, both aesthetic and psychological:
Enhanced Appearance: Whiter teeth can significantly improve your smile’s aesthetic appeal, boosting self-confidence and making you feel more attractive.
Youthful Appearance: As we age, our teeth naturally tend to yellow or darken. Teeth whitening can reverse these effects, helping you achieve a more youthful and vibrant smile.
Non-Invasive Procedure: Teeth whitening is a non-surgical and non-invasive cosmetic dental treatment. It does not require any drilling or removal of tooth structure, making it a safe and comfortable option.
Methods of Teeth Whitening
In-Office Professional Teeth Whitening: This method involves a visit to the dental clinic, where a dental professional applies a professional-strength whitening gel to your teeth. The gel is activated by a special light or laser, accelerating the whitening process. In-office whitening typically provides immediate and dramatic results, making it a popular choice for those seeking quick and noticeable improvements.
Take-Home Teeth Whitening Kits: Take-home whitening kits allow you to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. The dentist provides custom-made trays and a professional-grade whitening gel. You wear the trays filled with the gel for a specified amount of time each day, gradually brightening your smile over several weeks. This method offers flexibility and convenience, allowing you to achieve professional results at your own pace.

Common FAQ about teeth whitening
1) How teeth whitening works?
Teeth whitening gels contains oxidising agents (whether carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) that penetrates your enamel to get to the discoloured molecules in your teeth. These discoloured molecules which are inside your tooth is not able to be removed by regular brushing or teeth cleaning.
Oxygen molecules released from the whitening gels will breakdown the discoloured molecules and the oxygen molecules will spread throughout the entire tooth. As a result you will get a brighter, whiter smile.
2) Is teeth whitening safe?
Teeth whitening is absolutely safe with no side effects when carried out by registered dentists.
3) Can pregnant woman or children undergo teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening on pregnant woman or children is not advisable. There is no long term research data on safeness of whitening procedure on them.
