Root Canal Treatment

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a procedure that is used to treat infection at the centre of tooth (dental pulp) . By doing this treatment, the bacteria inside the dental pulp will be eliminated, preventing reinfection and save the natural tooth from removal.

Reasons that you might need treatment

There are many reasons that you might need the treatment, here are a few common ones:

  • Deep decay that hit the pulp
  • Cracked or chipped tooth
  • Trauma to the tooth, eg: fell down
  • Previous dental filings that hit the pulp

How does the treatment save the tooth?

During treatment of root canal, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected with chemical disinfectants and root canal files. Then the root canals are filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling for protection and will continue to function like any other tooth.

Endodontic treatment helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limits the need for ongoing dental work. With proper care, most teeth that have had treatment of root canal can last a lifetime.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Not at all during the treatment itself as local anaesthesia is given during the procedure. However rarely some patients might experience some soreness for few days after treatment, which is nothing compared to the severe pain of toothache.
